This idea comes from an episode of 'Good Eats'. I don't usually watch the show, but luckily I felt like procrastinating and watched the pasta episode because one of my roommates had it on. Alton instructs people to craft anti-sauces, which is pretty much olive oil and whatever else you want to eat at the time. My anti-sauce was minced garlic, mushrooms, pine nuts, basil, oregano and a bit of salt and pepper.
I really like the anti-sauce idea because it is really versatile. I just happened to have canned mushrooms, some pine nuts left over from a previous meal and plenty of spices (always!). So, I was pretty much making this by pulling things out of the pantry. Mine turned out pretty good. Definitely would have been better with fresh mushrooms and herbs, but I didn't really plan ahead.
This way easy to make, as well. I prepared the noodles like I would any other time. Right after draining the pasta, I put it in a dish that had some olive and minced garlic in it. I tossed this around until the noodles all had some oil on them. Then, I added the mushrooms and pine nuts (toasted while the noodles were finishing) and seasoned to taste.
Like other hodge podge dishes, it's hard to determine how much this cost to prepare. Pine nuts are a little pricey (but worth it!), but canned mushrooms are cheap. My best guess would be around 3 to 4 dollars. I made enough to feed myself twice.
This dish is suited for anyone. You would just need to figure out what type of things your audience would want to eat. I plan on trying this dish over and over again with different anti-sauces (Roasted red peppers sounds good for next time, I think).
